  • When are we not talking about TikTok and Gen Z these days? 📱🎵 This article helps make sense of it all. Gen Z seeks discoverability, interactivity, and authenticity. TikTok cracked that code to give just what was needed after a time of social disconnectedness and disingenuousness.
  • On another social note, data.ai released a full report on the “State of Mobile 2023”. Social Media Today does a great job with the wrap-up. Some highlights below:
    • BeReal takes the cake for rookie app of the year with downloads reaching “5.3 million in August 2022.”
    • Instagram, WhatApp, Snapchat, and TikTok dominated the most downloaded app category in most regions.
    • Time spent on socials hiked up over 2 TRILLION hours in 2022.
  • What is wrong with this picture from Marketing Charts of B2B ABM Marketers self-assessments of competency in critical tactical skills? 🤔 Could it be that they are most proficient at “Campaign planning and execution” and least proficient at “Data and analytics for ABM”?

  • Here are some PPC marketing trends to note for 2023. Our paid search team thinks number 3 is the most important one, since we’ve seen great performance with Bing.
  • Another day, (yet) another lawsuit for Meta, Alphabet, and other social media giants. Seattle schools “allege that “misconduct” by the Big Tech firms has been a large factor in the youth mental health crisis. Opinions are split. My question: how a lawsuit can aid in fixing a cultural issue. Stay on top of the news here.

  • The move to GA4 is approaching. MarTech has a Q&A with the Director of Google Analytics on the migration from UA (Universal Analytics) to GA4. It’s a useful read to understand the thinking behind the move and the power of the new platform.
  • Twitter now faces an overall 88% reduction in staff since Musk’s has been in charge. No one knows how this is going to play out. All we can do is to continue to follow the blue bird through this uncertain, cutthroat time.
  • On a lighter note, national and state parks are offering free, all-terrain wheelchairs for those who need them. This makes me excited for all the possibilities this unfolds. 🍁
  • How are you analyzing your brand story in a broader cultural context? Rob Engelsman and his co-founder, Alexa Beck, from Quick Study created the helpful ACES acronym and infographic to help answer this crucial question.

If the suits are successful, we could be saying farewell to the Wayback Machine, too.

  • The Status of SEO 🔎
    • Search Engine Watch offers “An SEO strategy flywheel to win leadership buy-in and drive results.” In essence, it follows the same approach DBE uses, but it also includes discussion of “confident humility” as defined by Adam Grant. He says it’s” the sweet spot in the axes of confidence and competence.”
    • One of our potential clients recently asked us how long SEO takes. Our rule-of-thumb response is 4-6 months for significant improvements, though dynamic sites (sites with lots of content changes, think news, and e-commerce) can start to see results much faster. Google the question and you’ll see the same response in the results. Dig a little further and you’ll find the results of a recent survey of 75 SEO experts in this from Morningscore.
  • The full switch to GA4 is right around the bend! Dana DiTomaso breaks down the 4 simple things you need to know, including how all hits are “events” and that “engagement rate” is not the opposite of bounce rate. Definitely a good, straight-forward read.

  • Here’s a GA4 follow-up article from Martech, reporting the results of their poll showing the vast majority of marketers will stick with GA4 albeit “kicking and screaming” along the way.
  • The February 2022 Report from The CMO Survey is online and includes focus on “Managing Digital Marketing Returns” in addition to its usual insights on overall marketing spending by company size, economic sector and industry sector. BTW, the overall expected increase in digital marketing budgets in the next 12 months is over 16%!
  • When is the best time to post on Instagram? Easy read from Hootsuite.
  • Nobody likes listening to a person that only talks about themselves. Your customers are no different. How can you enhance your copy to be more customer-centric? Check out this article from copywriter, Belinda Weaver.
