<p>January’s half gone, or has half to go—what’s your perspective on that? Guess it depends on how much you’ve accomplished so far this month. I’ve made a referral that closed, signed a contract to write a chapter for a book for marketing executives, and my company, Digital Brand Expressions, is getting lots of attention for the pioneering work we’re doing for a new kind of SEO, called Search AI Optimization (SAIO). Not a bad way to start the year!</p>
<p>What are your 2024 early successes? I’d love to hear them.</p>

<li>What is “<a href="https://www.economist.com/special-report/2024/01/10/the-effective-altruism-movement-is-louder-than-it-is-large">effective altruism</a>” (EA) and why does it matter? As we look for ways to improve the planet through business, take a look at this concept which focuses on using data and not emotion to make philanthropic donations with an eye to the cost-benefit analysis of how the funds will be used. I’m sharing because this is heady stuff (of course it is, the article is from The Economist): who gets funding, are donations for short-term or long-term fixes, etc. but it also plays to the other concepts we talk about here each week, in particular, the role businesses play in creating the ripples that make waves of improvement for people beyond their own perimeter.</li>

<li>Why is there such a gap between what executives are saying about <a href="https://fortune-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/fortune.com/2023/05/14/flexible-work-feminist-women-return-office-power-men-careers-erin-grau/amp/">remote work’s effectiveness</a> and employees’ expressions on the same? Hmmm, I can’t help but notice a lot of the people demanding return to the office are men, who study after study show don’t, on average, shoulder the same amount of family-related work as their female partners. <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/eringrau/">Erin Grau</a> makes some good points in her piece for Fortune on flexible work and “the system.”</li>

<li>You know I’m fascinated by entrepreneurs, especially the ones who make their way by looking at something from a different perspective. This is a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-make-money-amazon-retail-arbitrage-strategies-resell-products-2024-1">simple arbitrage play</a> by <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/sahaj-dhingra/">Sahaj Dhingra</a> and what I appreciate in this story is not just the win but the honesty. Common symptoms may include headaches, stomach discomfort, fatigue, changes in appetite, and little to no sleep. Emotional symptoms may involve a lack of motivation, feeling detached, and a sense of helplessness. In this blog, we will go over various causes of burnout and talk about solutions to overcome it.</span></p>

Stress primarily affects the body physically, whereas burnout is more emotionally driven. It&#8217;s important to note that stress can lead to burnout. Over-engagement can give rise to stress, which, if left unchecked, can evolve into disengagement, resulting in burnout. Difficulty starting your workday and maintaining focus, or constantly saying &#8220;I don&#8217;t want to work today, &#8220;can be early signs of burnout. Similarly, if you find yourself struggling to start tasks or consistently lacking concentration, these could also be signs of burnout.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Changes in sleep patterns and low energy levels are also signs to look out for. While occasional fatigue is normal, chronic exhaustion throughout the day may be a sign of burnout. Unexplained physical symptoms such as headaches and stomach issues can be triggered by workplace stress, potentially leading to burnout. </span></p>

Additionally, a major contributor to burnout is an unhealthy work-life balance. A balance between work and personal life is essential for your overall well-being. A healthy work-life balance can enhance productivity, reduce the likelihood of falling ill, and improve time management. </span></p>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Engaging in relaxing hobbies or activities away from work. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Seeking support from colleagues, friends, or family members. </span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Prioritizing sufficient sleep and regular exercise is crucial, though it may not be easy to initiate such changes. </span></li>
</ul>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Think of it as a lifestyle adjustment rather than a quick fix.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Start small by taking short walks, eliminating unhealthy food choices such as soda (something small but easy), and gradually adjusting your bedtime. Reducing screen time, especially before sleep, can also help in creating a healthier routine.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Engaging in hobbies and activities that provide separation from work is a key strategy. It&#8217;s essential to carve out dedicated personal time. This separation can significantly reduce stress levels and, in turn, mitigate burnout. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Seeking social support is another effective means of preventing burnout. Talking about your issues can be surprisingly helpful. Having these conversations/outlets helps you gain perspective (especially when you hear yourself speaking out loud) and may even lead to solutions right away. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s helpful to discuss concerns with your coworkers because they more than likely have experienced what you’re going through at some point. However, it&#8217;s important to choose someone you can trust and remain professional. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At DBE, we are proactive about preventing burnout. Below are some of the ways we do that–maybe these can work for your team too:</span></p>

<li aria-level="1"><b>Quick Errands</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – Appointments don’t count against PTO, as long as the time is made up.</span></li>
<li aria-level="1"><b>Breaks</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> – Our CEO, Niki Fielding, encourages employees to take lunch and walking breaks.</span></li>

There have also been questions around the concept of optimizing for conversational search chatbots. So, I’m here with Natalie to provide some answers. What’s the first question Natalie?</span></p>
<p><strong><em>What does SAIO stand for?</em></strong></p>
<p>SAIO (rhymes with day-o) stands for Search Artificial Intelligence Optimization. That’s a mouthful, so SAIO or Search AI Optimization if you’re feeling the need to compromise.</p>
<p><strong><em>When you say AI here, do you mean using AI for quickly developing site content?</em></strong></p>
<p>No, SAIO is for optimizing a website to be found by conversational chat bots, like Bing Copilot and Google Search Generative Experience (SGE).</p>
<p><strong><em>What about ChatGPT and Bard – aren’t they also conversational and generative chatbots?</em></strong></p>
<p>They are but they don’t typically provide citations and links to the sources used in their responses. Without those citations, there is no SEO-type value-–they don’t help drive site traffic.</p>
<p>So we’ve put together this chart to show the similarities and differences between four of the main search-oriented chatbots.</p>

<li>ChatGPT created by Open AI,</li>
<li>Bing Copilot which is run by Microsoft using a ChatGPT license,</li>
<li>Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE), and</li>
<li>Google’s Bard.</li>
</ol>
<p>All four are very similar in their conversational content generating capabilities.</p>
<p>Where they differ is in their ability to access the internet and process real-world information.</p>
<p>ChatGPT does not access the internet at all. Its responses are based on the masses of information that OpenAI trained it on.</p>
<p>Bard can access the internet (through Google, of course), but it only sometimes provides citations for its sources and rarely includes a direct link to that source.</p>
<p>Bing Copilot and Google SGE provide citations with links on a regular basis as part of the conversations. Therefore, Bing Copilot and Google SGE are our primary SAIO targets–for now.</p>
<p><strong><em>I noticed there is a note about Bing Copilot and Bard – can you explain?</em></strong></p>
<p>Sure. We used those chatbots to help create this comparison table. However, they came back with different responses and some inaccurate responses as well.</p>
<p>When we challenged some of their responses, they corrected themselves with the caveat they are still “learning.” It’s a good reminder that any chatbot response should be reviewed by a human with some expertise in the subject matter. Take the “trust but verify” approach.</p>
<p><strong><em>Getting back to SAIO, how does optimization for the chatbots work?</em></strong></p>
<p>Basically, because chatbots are learning machines, you need to help them find your website so they can “E-E-A-T” up your content and use it as a resource for relevant search results. Note that I am referring to the E-E-A-T acronym that stands for Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust. Google recommends using this model for generating relevant content that helps gain rankings in the traditional search engines.</p>
<p><strong><em>Isn’t E-E-A-T a best practice for SEO?</em></strong></p>
<p>Yes, and having a well-optimized website that is generating natural search rankings is one of the ways the chatbots can find and learn about your website, too.</p>
<p><strong><em>How is SAIO different from SEO?</em></strong></p>
<p>The SAIO chatbots look at website content differently from the regular search bots so they are less influenced by the page and keyword specificity we use for SEO.</p>
<p>The SAIO content has to be more informational and conversational in nature.</p>
<p>Here’s our chart showing how SEO and SAIO are parts of the same optimization iceberg but work differently when you look underneath.</p>
<p>You’ll see for SAIO we recommend more structured types of content including schema and product listings from a technical perspective and FAQs, how-tos, infographics, etc. from a conversational perspective.</p>

<p><b>Nat</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: Yes, we’re seeing a shift in the content brainstorming and drafting process. In a previous <a href="https://www.digitalbrandexpressions.com/2023/05/10/creative-content-youtube-short-ads-digital-ad-spending/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">What’s Hot Wednesday newsletter</a>, I mentioned that marketing expert, Ross Simmonds, referred to AI as our “supersuit,” and I love this metaphor. We can utilize AI to brainstorm trends and write a first draft of our content, BUT we need to add experience… and humanize the piece. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">AI can help us save time in the first phases of content creation, but we still need to check accuracy and breathe life into the work.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Marc:</strong> Glad you mentioned experience there because that is the one element of the SEO EEAT model that I don’t think AI can deliver in terms of content. Ideas for SEO content, yes, especially for blog pages. Maybe even an outline for the content, but you still need to do the editing.</span></p>
<p><b>Nat:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Other than content, how else can AI help support SEO?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Marc: </strong> Well, I think AI can help, at least in the early stages, with creating ideas for blogs (which are good SEO optimization opportunities) and it can help in terms of maybe even generating a content outline. But going back to that experience factor, you really need to be able to edit what it&#8217;s coming out with in order to make it align with that experience element that human touch, as you said, and then in terms of other things AI the chat bot GPT says it can do basically, many of the SEO best practices that we do on a regular basis. The data dates back to when it was input. The latest input was in September of 2021, so you can see there are limitations for it to actually do the work that we would otherwise be doing. And then when we get to the workarounds, you can ask AI to say, OK, give me some keywords based on a particular industry your product may be in. Then, it&#8217;ll come back and give you some ideas on keywords with respect to products, brand names, competitor names, and might even give you some types of descriptions or product features that you could think about. But then it comes back to you with yet another caveat. It says to you and you can see above. It&#8217;s basically saying, while I can give you all these ideas, this is just a starting point and you should go off and leverage things like MOZ or the Google Keyword Planner or Semrush in order to complete those tasks.</span></p>
<p><b>Nat:</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> That’s interesting because we already have expertise in leveraging all three of those tools for keyword research and analysis.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><strong>Marc:</strong> That’s true but let’s take a little longer view. If AI can get us this far with social and search marketing tactics </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">today,</span><span style="font-weight: 400;"> how much further and faster will AI perform in a few months? One thing is for sure, we’re going to be having more of these conversations with each other and the chatbots so stay tuned for future updates.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">DBE’s VP of Client Strategy, Marc Engelsman, predicted DBE would capitulate in early April to the folly of this underdog support. “Look, we’ve seen what happens when we spring forward/fall back every year. Why would we add to the chaos?”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Veronica “Niki” Fielding, President and CEO of DBE, believes Mr. Engelsman’s opinion is self-motivated, “His birthday is at the end of April,” she said, “He’s just worried we won’t celebrate it this year if May takes a page from March.”</span></p>

<p>Imposter syndrome is defined as “<em>a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evident success” </em>by <em><a href="https://hbr.org/2008/05/overcoming-imposter-syndrome" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Harvard Business Review</a></em><em>. </em>Those affected may wonder why this occurs and, more importantly, how these feelings can be lessened or overcome completely.</p>

<p class="fusion-responsive-typography-calculated" style="--fontsize: 26; line-height: 1.4;" data-fontsize="26" data-lineheight="36.4px"><strong>There are many reasons why someone may experience imposter syndrome.</strong></p>
<p>Researchers believe imposter syndrome can come from different areas of life.</p>
<p>A major one is that people experiencing imposter syndrome already suffer from anxiety. “<em>Imposter syndrome is frequently associated with trait anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and social anxiety disorder. I don’t see a lot of people with imposter syndrome who don’t have anxiety,” </em>explains psychologist and academic director Audrey Ervin. Individuals who suffer from existing anxiety are more likely to suffer from imposter syndrome than those without.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.wellandgood.com/imposter-syndrome-perfectionism/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Perfectionism</a> is another common symptom seen in people with imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome and perfectionism can go hand in hand. Someone new in a position may feel like a failure because they are setting high standards for performance. When they do not meet those standards, they see themselves as a failure.</p>
<p>Another factor with people that have imposter syndrome is associating success or achievements with luck. Gill Corkindale explains in his article, <em>Overcoming Imposter Syndrome</em>, “<em>The tendency to attribute success to luck or to other external reasons and not their abilities is a clear indicator of imposter syndrome. They may typically say or think: “I just got lucky” or “it was a fluke”. Often this masks the fear that they will not be able to succeed the next time</em>.” Essentially, those suffering from imposter syndrome feel unable to take credit for their own success, making it difficult to find joy or motivation in their work.</p>

<p><strong>How does someone overcome imposter syndrome?</strong></p>
<p>There are many ways people can overcome imposter syndrome. One of the major steps is recognizing when these negative feelings emerge and reframe your thinking. No one is going to know everything in their job when they first start out, so it’s important that they do not get discouraged when struggling to understand certain aspects of their job.</p>
<p>It is also important that individuals reach out for help from family, friends, or even professionals if needed. Outside guidance may give a new perspective and help with overcoming feelings of self-doubt.</p>
<p>Embracing success and showing self-compassion are other ways to navigate feeling like you’re faking it. Celebrating your successes, even small ones, can be pivotal in boosting self confidence. Each day or week, list every success and explain to yourself how and why you succeeded, instead of brushing it off as luck. As Alexandra Owens, in her article for <a href="https://www.psycom.net/imposter-syndrome" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Psycom.net</a>, explains,<em> “Over time, this practice will give you a realistic picture of your accomplishments and help affirm your self-worth</em>.”</p>
<p>Another way you can help yourself overcome imposter syndrome is taking Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. MBCT helps people reflect on their feelings and foster more compassionate, constructive ways of relating to themselves. It has become a popular approach to help manage symptoms of imposter syndrome.</p>
